International Women’s Day 2024

International Women's Day (IWD) on March 8, is more than just a day to celebrate the achievements of women - it's a vital movement for advocating gender parity and championing the social, economic, cultural, and political success of everyone who identifies as a woman globally. Learn how you can celebrate it right here in the Okanagan!

What is International Women's Day?

International Women's Day, observed since the early 1900s, is more than a date; it's a worldwide effort to promote equal rights for women and celebrate their achievements in society, economy, culture, and politics. The day inclusively recognizes all who identify as women, encompassing cisgender and transgender women, as well as genderqueer and non-binary individuals.

This day began during a period of major growth and change globally and celebrating it is about more than just recognizing women's successes. It involves challenging unfair stereotypes and biases, changing the way we think about gender, and working towards equal rights for everyone to create a fair and welcoming community.

The Government of Canada’s theme for International Women's Day 2024 is Invest in women: Accelerate progress. This theme encourages us to support women's equality to help create healthier, richer, and friendlier communities.

  • Kelowna Women in Business (KWIB) Mentorship Program

This program focuses on empowering women in business and professional fields. It offers a 12-week mentorship program designed for both entrepreneurs and professionals. • UBC Geering Up Mentorship Program

This program, based at UBC Okanagan, is geared towards inspiring the next generation of STEM leaders. Mentors work with students in various capacities, sharing insights about their work and experiences in STEM fields. • UBC WiSE Mentoring Program

Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) Mentoring Program at the Okanagan Campus of the University of British Columbia connects industry mentors with female students in the Faculties of Engineering and the Irving K Barber School of Arts and Sciences. • Okanagan Women’s Mentoring and Angel Network

The Okanagan Women’s Mentoring and Angel Network (OKGN WMAN) is dedicated to helping women-owned and gender-diverse businesses find investments and increasing women's participation as angel investors and board members in Western Canada. Despite these businesses often performing well financially, they typically receive a small portion of startup capital. OKGN WMAN works to create a strong community of female entrepreneurs and investors. Network members collectively invest in a fund to support promising businesses, gaining knowledge in investing and mentoring along the way. The network also connects entrepreneurs with a broader investor base across Canada.

  • Dress for Success The Professional Women’s Group

The Professional Women’s Group (PWG) offers a complimentary program aimed at providing guidance, inspiration, and a sense of community to women and gender-diverse individuals as they navigate their professional and personal life challenges and opportunities. The program has a track record of significantly improving mentee confidence in their business skills, from 39% before participation to 95% afterward. It also includes options like one-to-one mentoring, growth peer mentoring groups, and specialized programs like the Discovery Foundation’s Strategic Mindset Program, tailored to support women in business and tech fields.
